Dr Tialiba Longkumer (MS Gen. Surgery) Mokokchung, Nagaland Since there is no documented study on stomach cancer in Mokokchung. I have done a basic, hand on experience study from 2013 to 2017 about the prevalence and incidences of stomach cancer in Mokokchung. The patient with upper gastrointestinal complains were done upper G.I. endoscopy, suspected ulcers or growth on endoscopy were taken biopsy and cancer confirmed by histopathological examination. 2000 U.G.I Endoscopy were done in patients with upper G.I. Complains out of which 166 patients showed features suspicious of cancer (APD ulcers excluded), biopsy were taken in all those cases. Of the 166 patients (male 110 and female 56) with ulcerorproliferative growth and large ulcer (more than 2cm), 36 patients (male 29 and female 7) had a biopsy confirm Stomach Cancer. Among the 36 cancer patients only three of the patient had palliative operation, one Gastrojujustonomy and two subtotal gastrictectomy with gastrojujunostomy. Post operatively only one patient received chemotherapy 5FU. The operated patients were followed up for one year and were eventually expired at home. When statistical data’s are not mention here for simplicity sake, It is obvious from the study that most of the patients were diagnosed at the late stage of stomach cancer when cure is not possible; in this regard the reasons were looked into. It was found that, the common causes for delay in diagnosis were 1. Prescription of gastric medicine for months and years without doing endoscopy by physicians. 2. Lack of awareness regarding stomach cancer by both patient and treating physicians. 3. Fear on the part of patient to do endoscopy even when it is advised on time by physician. 4. Abuse of gastric medicine by patients themselves without endoscopy. When further studies are needed, as of now, common sense base on study on study indicates that detection at late stage of cancer due to lack of awareness for confirmatory endoscopy by Physician as well as the patients are the most important factor for poor outcome of treatment in a Cancer which is curable if detected in the early stage of Disease.
