Nagaland Minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse remarked that the opportunities available in horticulture sector have increased manifold, and plays an important economic role in the state today.

Inaugurating the sub-divisional horticulture office, Pughoboto on September 27, Kruse said the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio has its plan to help and uplift the lives of Naga people, while the horticulture department is trying to provide the best possible requirements and help those farmers and interested Nagas who wants to venture out into farming.

The Minister maintained that the newly inaugurated office signifies the government’s unwavering commitment towards creating a sustainable economy – ‘a tangible manifestation of our determination to impact our farmers through advancing horticultural practices.’

Over the years, she pointed out that horticulture has become a very important source of providing livelihoods, both in the rural and urban areas, with markets available in the country as well as abroad.

The Minister asserted that Horticulture is not merely a means of diversification but forms an integral part of food, nutritional security and poverty alleviation, and also an essential ingredient of the state’s economic security. “Horticulture is a highly significant economic sector, and has a large share in the total agricultural production value of the state” said Kruse.

Terming today’s Horticulture office inauguration as a momentous occasion especially for the department of Horticulture and the people of Pughoboto, she said, “This marks a new chapter in our journey towards a more sustainable future.”

Stating that Pughoboto area is blessed richly with various horticultural crops, Kruse said Pughoboto can pave the way for future entrepreneurs and business people at large. Towards this end, she said the office should become a bridge between the local people and customers with the end result of profits and benefits.

She encouraged the womenfolk on the prospects of floriculture, which said has become a booming business for many women in Nagaland.

She assured that the department will do its best to implement and provide all the schemes and programmes that the central and state government offers for the farmers.

At the same time, Kruse also urged all the department officers to guide and help the farmers to avail all the opportunities, and expressed hope that this will boost the economy of Pughoboto people in general.

She also called upon all ‘to embrace the spirit of collaboration to transform our society into a vibrant and thriving society and take Nagaland towards a state of excellence.’
