Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said that there has been substantial improvement in the health facilities to deal with COVID-19 cases in Nagaland.

We took every possible step to further develop and improve our entire health infrastructure, Rio said in his address at the 58th Nagaland statehood day here at Nagaland Civil Secretariat Plaza.

He said that elaborate protocols and processes for management of returnees and their quarantining were worked out and put into action which kept the state free from the virus for a much longer period, providing crucial time for further strengthening our health systems.

The number of ventilators in the hospitals has increased from 14 in March 2020 to 145 now and the number of beds in isolation wards, ICU and non-ICU wards, in COVID Hospitals, and in COVID Care Centers have substantially increased in the last eight months.

Nagaland now has 2600-3000 testing capacity per day and the number of ambulances was also substantially increased, and there are now 110 departmental ambulances, he said.

Rio informed that the state government has increased the strength of healthcare workers through recruitment of 109 medical doctors, 5 dental surgeons, 129 nurses, 6 research scientists, 6 laboratory technicians for BSI Laboratories, 10 OT technicians and 13 ECG technicians.

Appointment of 21 AYUSH doctors and 129 nurses is nearing completion, he said.

Further, a new catheterization laboratory has been installed in CIHSR Dimapur.

A new Medical College is also being established in Mon which will go a long way in further improving the health sector especially in the eastern parts of the state, he said.

“With the cooperation and active support of our people, we have achieved some success in controlling the spread of the COVID-19, for which we are happy. But we should also be aware that the threat of the pandemic still exists and we cannot afford to lower our guard any time soon,” Rio said.

He also called upon to unfailingly continue wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, practice regular washing of hands etc., and keep adhering to the health advisories and Standard Operating Procedures issued by the government.
