Chumliba R, a student of Loyola Higher Secondary School Kiphire has topped the Arts Stream in Nagaland’s Higher Secondary examinations with 92%, giving the people of Kiphire something to cheer about amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to The Morung Express, Chumliba R said appeared overwhelmed with the results. “At the time when result was declared I was in the field helping my parents,” he said, adding “I’m overwhelmed at the moment. I felt like it was a dream.”

Sitting on the balcony of their modest home in his native village Lihtsaoung, Chumliba attributed his success to God, his teachers and his parents “for always believing in me pushing me to do my best.”

It was not a smooth journey, the young student said of his achievement. “I always prepared in advance but sometimes due to time constrain, I don't study daily. But what made me achieve my dream is I always take every exam as my last exam,” Chumliba stated.

“Today I felt like I have set an example that to be an achiever, one does not need to be extra ordinary. Irrespective of where you come from or which tribe you belong to, success comes to those who work for it,” he adds.

Thanking his parents for sacrificing everything in order to give him quality education, Chumliba said “my parents have always helped me through prayer and provided everything I need in spite of financial problems. They work hard, day and night, to give me and my brothers and sisters good education.”

Chumliba aspires to become a civil servant. Referring to the civil servants in his district, he said “I believe that one day I could also become like them because I want to contribute in developing my society and I want to be an example that no matter where you come from you can always achieve it with hardworking and dedication.”

He went on to state that after high school, he wanted to study science but had to opt for Arts due to financial difficulties. However, he chose to remain optimistic in the belief that he could still achieve his ambitions because “I only changed my stream not my ambition.”

Thanking God for her child’s success Chumliba mother said “we are illiterate but we understood the importance of education so his dad and I sold vegetables, fruits or whatever we can to pay their school fees and give them the best education.” We brought them up to fear God and work hard, she added.

Showing maturity beyond his age, Chumliba had a word of wisdom for his juniors- “With hard work and dedication, one can accomplish anything without complaining from where one comes from.”

Ecstatic at his achievement, Chumliba said he wanted to celebrate his achievement with a small get-together with his family members and friends. However, he said he decided against it as social gatherings at the moment would be against the law.

It may be mentioned that for the first time Kiphire has three toppers from the district securing Top- 9 position in HSLC and Top- 1 and 8 positions in HSSLC examinations.
