Success story of rural youth through piggery farming under ARYA Project at Wokha

Enterprise: Piggery Farming

Profile of the Youth: Limhathung Ezung is a graduate unemployed youth from Longsa village of Wokha district. He has been in touch with the pig rearing since his childhood, watching at his parents working in their own pig farm. After graduation he was searching for govt/ private jobs but could not succeed. Then, he decided to start a pig farm for breeding purpose on commercial basis in the year 2014. Till date, he has been maintaining the pig farm and earning an income of Rs.1, 50,000 annually. 

KVK Intervention: In the month of December, 2015, he came to know about ARYA project, so then he decided to approach the KVK, Wokha for technical guidance and financial support for pig farming. Seeing his keen interest and zeal for becoming an entrepreneur, he was included under ARYA project for taking up of pig enterprise in the year 2016. Skill training on scientific management (breeding, feeding, housing and healthcare) of pig was provided in the year 2016 under the project. Now, he has emerged as one of the successful entrepreneurs among the youth in pig enterprise under ARYA project and earning betweenRs.1, 50,000 to Rs.1, 80, 000 annually from pig farming.

Input/Support provided: After the skill training was completed, site selection was done and necessary inputs was provided for construction of pig sty on 28th of January, 2017.

Output & Outcome: Limhathung started his pig farm in the year 2014 with 4 nos. pigs initially but when he was selected for piggery production unit under ARYA project, he transformed his farm into pig breeding farm. Average size of piglets farrowed by his sow is 9 nos. with 1-2% piglet mortality. During 2017-18, on his first venture, he generated an income of Rs. 2, 34,500 from selling of 67 nos. of piglets @ Rs. 3,500/ piglets. He also earned an income of Rs. 30,000 from boar servicing, as quality boar was not available. Then in the year 2018-19, he sold 102 nos. piglets generating an income ofRs.3, 57,000. The income generated from the pig farm in 2 years has definitely self-motivated him to go for farming profession. He has been a great example to the coming younger generation. A. INCOME STATEMENT

Market Linkage: Production of good quality piglet is very low in the district, so selling of piglet is not very difficult. His farm is a very reputed farm in the Wokha district. He is known to many state veterinary officers, where sometimes they also purchased piglet from him.

Impact: Limhathung Ezung has motivated many youths of the area to take up pig breeding farming. Recently, he helped three youths from the neighbouring village to setup new piggery farming. He has been delivering lecture and sharing his experiences on pig farming with the youth and SHG from the nearby area as a resource person.
