Sumi community celebrates Tuluni Festival

The Sümi community in Kohima marked its premier festival, Tuluni, on July 8 with vibrant celebrations. The High School, Bayavü, Sepfüzou Sümi Community Kohima (HBSSCK) jointly celebrated 27th Tuluni Tiqhe‑Tini Küpüghü at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima.

Tuluni, the premier festival of Sümi Naga community, marks the season of abundant crops and is a time for feasting, gift exchange, and strengthening community bonds. The festival is a celebration of a bountiful harvest and a time to express gratitude for nature's gifts.

Rev Dr Kiyeto Sema, Senior Pastor of SABCK, delivered the festival address, stressing the importance of preserving culture and spiritual growth. He also prayed for the newly inducted office bearers of HBSSCK. HBSSCK chairman Hetovi Kappo highlighted the importance of the festival, saying it promotes reconciliation. “Tuluni is a time for rest and joy after months of hard work,” he said.

The event was chaired by HBSSCK Finance Secretary Ito Aye. The programme started with a prayer by Associate Pastor Alti Chophi of SBCK Fellowship.

A traditional Sümi marriage proposal drama (Kughupu Kighini), was presented by Lhothemi qo group, with Ibeto V Swu playing a key role. Cultural performances and folk song also marked the celebration. Akiyetou and Akini Yekikithiu presented reports on community activities. Vote of thanks was proposed by HBSSCK Vice Chairman Tokavi Chophi. The celebration ended with a blessing from Dr L Botoholi Yeptho, Associate Pastor (General) SBCK, followed by a community feast.

Uphold the spirit of unity: Pukhayi
Meanwhile, the Sumi Community of New Ministers' Hill, Kohima also celebrated the 35th Tuluni celebration at New Ministers' Hill, Kohima where former MLA Pukhayi Sumi called upon members of the community members to uphold the spirit of unity, compassion, and collective growth while addressing the gathering.

In his greetings speech, Pukhayi paid tribute to the early Sumi settlers of the colony, acknowledging their vision, resilience, and commitment to building a strong and vibrant community. “Today is a day of celebration, an occasion to thank the visionary who laid the foundation for the Sumis in the colony,” he said. “We honour their resilience, their wisdom, and their unwavering commitment to building a thriving community.”

He emphasized that the unity among residents has been the driving force behind the remarkable progress of the community over the years. “It is this togetherness that has empowered us to overcome challenges, achieve significant milestones, and witness the tremendous growth we see today,” he added.

Encouraging the younger generation to continue the legacy of the elders, Pukhayi urged the community to carry forward the values of cooperation, generosity, and mutual support. “Let us continue to support one another, extend kindness and compassion, and work hand in hand to build an even brighter future for generations to come,” he said.

Speaking on the significance of the Tuluni festival, Er. Hutoshe Awomi emphasized the crucial role parents play in educating younger generations about cultural heritage, traditions, and values. He noted that this intergenerational transmission of knowledge is essential for preserving customs and beliefs. At the same time, he encouraged the youth to actively engage with these traditions, adapt them to contemporary contexts, and carry them forward into the future. According to him, this dynamic interplay between generations not only sustains the relevance and vitality of cultural practices but also strengthens communities and fosters a shared sense of identity.

The celebration was further enriched by a variety of cultural performances. A special number was presented by Nilokali Rochill and friends, followed by a spirited Tishele performance by the Mother's Group. Traditional songs and presentations like Lejole, Akhetsu Kuzu and Itsani added vibrancy to the event, reflecting the richness of Sumi cultural heritage.

The 35th Tuluni Festival brought together residents and well-wishers in a spirit of unity and celebration, reinforcing the values of community, culture, and collective identity.
The programme was chaired by, Chairman Sumi Community New Ministers Hill, Obed Sheqi. The celebration concluded with the appointment of new office bearers for the Sumi Community, New Ministers’ Hill, for the year 2025–2028 under the Chairmanship of Tokugha Yeptho.
