Sumi community in Dimapur celebrates Ahuna festival

High School Colony Council, Purana Bazar East Dimapur celebrated Ahuna festival on November 14 at the residences of its chairman L. Ghokheto Achumi.
  Dimapur, November 15 (MExN): Dimapur, November 15 (MExN): The post harvest festival Ahuna of the Sumi community was celebrated in various places organised by unions to invoke God’s blessings and to render gratitude to the creator.   Aotsakilimi Union Dimapur: The descendants of Aotsakilimi across western Sumi areas in Nagaland along with the in-laws celebrated the post harvest festival Ahuna of the Sumis on November 14 at Diphupar, Dimapur to revive the traditional practices and to maintain the bond amongst the members.   The festivity was organized by Aotsakilimi Union Dimapur (AUD) and hosted by retired ACF, Kughaho Achumi. Delivering the welcome speech ‘Ahuna Papu’ Kughaho Achumi spoke on the importance of unity and cooperation between the members and encouraged them to maintain the tie the member already has.   Tovishe Achumi spoke on the cultural significance of Ahuna festival. “Our forefathers performed animistic rituals during Ahuna celebration but today we celebrate with prayers. They offered animals to appease the spirits but today we offer our faith to God” he said.   Aotsakili Students’ Union presented certificates to two subject toppers of Nagaland University examination and meritorious students who passed the NBSE examinations with distinctions.   Khezheto Achumi, Assoc. Pastor, Thilixu Baptist Church led the celebratory programme, while Akheto Achumi, Chairman AUD proposed vote of thanks, and Ghukheto Achumi pronounced the benediction.   Sumi Community Council DC Court: Sumi Community under the aegis of Sumi Community Council, DC Court Area celebrated Ahuna Festival with Khekaho Aye, Sr. Treasury officer as Ahuna Papuh and Host.   Khekaho Aye while conveying Ahuna greetings to the gathering dwelled upon the significance of Ahuna in bringing the community people together. He also exhorted the members to be interdependent of one another to co-exist and contribute positively in the progress of the Sumi community.   Invocation was done by Simon Assumi Home Evangelist, DSBC. Chairman Sumi Community Council T Vikuto Zhimo delivered the welcome address, while CK Nihekhu (Retd Secretary) highlighted upon the significance of Ahuna. The formal session was chaired by Mughavi S Yeptho, while Cultural session was compered by Daniel Swu and Jepikali Zhimo.   Cultural presentations such as thishole, lejole and leshele were presented while traditional Sumi games such as angukupusu, akhetsu, amikukula, puxakuxu were organised.   TR Zeliang greets: Leader of opposition, TR Zeliang has extended warm greetings to the Sumi community on the occasion of Ahuna Festival, a festival celebrated to invoke God’s blessings and to render gratitude to the creator. “As we celebrate Ahuna, let us renew our vigour and determination to safeguard and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Sumis and the Nagas in general,” stated Zeliang and wished the Sumi community a happy and meaningful Ahuna celebration.
