Sumi Hoho Prez, senior Naga citizen passes away

Appeals to educational institutions

Dimapur, July 26 (MExN): Sumi Hoho President Hoikhe Hesso, passed away this morning at Kohima after prolonged illness. He was 79 years. Late Hesso was also Vice Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland State Branch (IRCSN) and was one of the founding members of the IRCSN and served as General Secretary of the society.

In view of the passing away of Late H. Hesso, the Sümi Hoho is organizing a funeral service on July 27 at 9:00 AM at Sümi Baptist Church, Kohima (Daklane). The Hoho appealed to the concerned authority of all the educational institutions in Sümi inhabited areas to close down their respective institutions on July 27, as a mark of respect and in honor to the departed leader.

Meanwhile condolence messages are pouring in on the passing away of the senior Naga citizen. Governor Nikhil Kumar expressed grief and sorrow and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed to the Almighty to grant solace to the departed soul. The Chief Minister, who is presently out of the country, has also expressed deep pain to hear of the sudden demise of Hoikhe Hesso.

The CM in his condolence issued through Additional Chief Secretary Toshi Aier stated that Late Hesso had dedicated his entire life to the service of the public and for the betterment of the State as a whole, and the contributions he had made during his lifetime will be remembered in the years to come. His demise is a great loss to the people of the State in general and the Sumis in particular, Rio stated.

The Collective Leadership of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim in their message offered deepest condolence to his family, friends, relatives and the Sumi people in general. 

“We were encouraged by the examples he set when he was with us all. He was very clear when it came to the issues of our nation. It must be fittingly acknowledged that he never betrayed the Naga people and the Naga Nation”, stated Isak Chishi Swu Chairman and Th. Muivah General Secretary.

The Congress Legislature Party Leader Nagaland Tokheho Yepthomi also expressed sadness and described Late Hoikhe Hesso as a sincere and dedicated social worker who held various positions in NGOs with integrity, humility and responsibility for the Naga people at large. The CLP Leader also recalled his long and distinguished service for the people of Nagaland. “The passing away Hoikhe Hesso, has not only left a vacuum in the Sumi Tribe but also the Naga people to whom he had served”, the condolence message stated and on behalf of the Congress Legislature Party, extended deepest and sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

Late Hoikhe Hesso, popularly known as H Hesso, was born on the 25th of September 1933 at Kohima. He was known to be a man of strong convictions. After his initial schooling in Kohima, he matriculated from Bengali High School, Imphal and thereafter, he went to study at St. Edmunds School Shillong from where he did his graduation.

Late Hesso was an active student leader and held important positions in various students’ forums. He joined the Naga National Movement in 1962, and later became actively involved in various fields of public activity. In 1974, he got elected as one of the Members of the Kohima Town Committee. He was also one of the Founding Members of the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland Branchs in 1982 and was it Secretary from 1989-94. He was the Vice Chairman of the Society from 2005 till date.

Because of his philanthropic activities and contributions to public service, he was awarded the Governor’s Award for Life Achievement for Indian Red Cross Movement Activity in 2004. He also held the position of the President of the Family Planning Association of Indian (FPA) Nagaland, and in 2006 he was elected to the All India Council Member of the FPA of India. In March 2011, he became the President of the Sumi Hoho, a position he held till his demise.
