Medziphema, July 23 (MExN): The Summer Challenger Football Tournament 2018 was kicked off by Zhaleo Rio, Deputy Speaker, NLA, at local ground, Medziphema, on July 23.
Altogether, 25 teams from different districts are taking part in the tournament organised by Catalysts for Change (C4C) group, a band of like-minded youths concerned for changes in the society.
In the inaugural match played between Kuda 'B' Youth, Dimapur and Ngaulwa Youth team, Peren, a closely contested match finally saw Ngawla team edge out Kuda 'B' team 3 - 2 at the final whistle.
Earlier, addressing the teams as well as a mammoth gathering at Local Ground, Medziphema, Zhaleo reflected on the past challenges of sportsmen like Dr. T. Ao who captained Indian team at the Olympics in 1948.
"Today, we have Kivi Zhimomi who have been inducted in the U-23 Indian team and besides other sportpersons who have made it to the top in their respective fields, it is always through commitment, dedication and perseverance that such goals are achieved," Rio stated while urging young players to be sincere and hardworking to overcome challenges.
Citing the example of Hema Das who made headlines for setting new World Record in 400m race just recently, Rio noted that "Das came from a very poor background but sheer determination, discipline and sincerity drove her to break all earlier records. In the same vein, Nagas must inculcate these dominant qualities and be committed in order to excel in any field because we have the talent."
Rio, who was the Chief Patron of the ceremony acknowledged the organisers of the event which can perfectly create interest for football lovers in the backdrop of the recently concluded World Cup. He remarked that the PDA government will continue to strive for development and prosperity in all spheres, while exhorting the youths to "take advantage of the government's vision for the welfare and uplift the youths" and to play proactive roles towards a developed, congenial society. Rio further assured to give his utmost support for future ventures which can ring in changes for a better tomorrow.
