Supply chain for horti products from Nagaland to be facilitated

Dimapur, May 7 (MExN): Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India in collaboration with National Horticulture Board (NHB) and Government of Nagaland organized a two day workshop on “supply chain & marketing of horticulture crops” at SASRD-NU Auditorium, Medziphema, Dimapur, Nagaland.
A press release received here informed that as a follow up of NE Marketing Summit that was held during December 15 to 18, 2010, the platform was created with an objective to facilitate supply chain for pineapple, ginger and turmeric from the state of Nagaland. The workshop also focused on creating awareness on formation of farmers’ organization for better marketing of the produce. CIH in collaboration with NHB, Department of Horticulture (Government of Nagaland) and International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA) with the help of Aquastar Distribution Logistics, Chennai & Growers Agri Reach Pvt. Ltd. (GAR), Bangalore will be facilitating the pineapple, ginger and turmeric growers of Nagaland for marketing in the coming season.
This workshop had a gathering of about 150 participants from various organizations like NHB, NERAMAC, APEDA, State Government Officials, APMC members, NGOs, SHGs, entrepreneurs, private companies and farmers from Tuensang, Wokha, Phek, Peren, Jalukie, Dimapur districts of Nagaland.
The resource persons were from private sector having long experience and expertise in marketing & supply chain management. They were Sunil Kumar S, Principal Consultant, Aum Consulting Inc & Marketing Consultant, ICCOA, Chennai, K B Udaya Kumar, Managing Director, Growers Agri Reach Pvt Ltd. & MD, Fresh Reach Retail, Bangalore & Mr. Ajay Kumar, Head (Agri. supply chain), Aqua star distribution logistics, Chennai. There was also a panel discussion on various central schemes available in marketing & supply chain where the panelists were N C Mistry, Addl. Managing Director, NHB, Dr. Akali Sema, Director, CIH, Surendra Singh, Deputy Director, NHB, Benjong Aier, Mission Director (HTMNE), Government of Nagaland, B Baruah, Regional Manager, APEDA, Pradeep Bhuyan, Asst. Manager, NERAMAC, APMC member, Ajay Kumar, K B Udaya Kumar. The discussion was facilitated by Sunil Kumar S.
The resource persons deliberated on the following topics during the workshop “marketing opportunities for horticulture crops in North East”, “support programs in horticulture”, “creation of organisation for marketing horticulture crops in Nagaland (a draft plan)”, “formation of farmers groups – their relevance in supply chain and marketing”, “supply chain issues in North East & potential solutions”. The final session was on formation of farmers’ organization where a model structure was put forward for further deliberation.  The key outcome of the workshop is that CIH will facilitate the farmers in availing central govt. schemes with the help of NHB officials and to work towards designing and execution of forming farmers’ organization.
