Wokha | July 28
In a move aimed at tightening regulations on unauthorised entries into Wokha district, members of the Lotha Students’ Union (LSU), along with the Wokha Village Students’ Union (WVSU), Tsumang Youth Organisation, and Niropen Colony Youth Organisation, carried out a surprise checking drive across parts of Wokha Town on July 27. The drive resulted in the detention of four individuals who, despite having valid identity documents such as the NRC (National Register of Citizens) issued in Assam, failed to produce the Inner Line Permit (ILP) required to legally enter or reside in Nagaland.
Nyanthung M. Khuvung, Education and Statistical Secretary, said, “No illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been caught so far. However, the four individuals we apprehended did not possess an ILP, even though they carried other forms of identification.”
Authorities have since taken custody of the four individuals, and the LSU has made it clear that this is only the beginning. The Union has plans to continue with more such inspections in the coming days, signalling a firm stance on enforcement of the ILP.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, WVSU President Chipenthung N. Kikon appealed to residents not to accommodate or engage with any individual lacking valid ILP documentation. He further requested that any suspected violators be reported immediately to the WVSU or Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) offices to ensure swift and appropriate intervention.
