Surrendered top militant among 2 killed in Imphal

IMPHAL, June 22 (NNN):  Former chairman of proscribed group PREPAK-VC, Ningombam Nabachandra and his driver were gunned down by unidentified persons inside a security complex located at Khabeisoi in Imphal East last night.  

Nabachandra, 57, had been staying at a quarter inside 7th Manipur Rifles complex since he surrendered to the Manipur government in 2014. Sources informed that the assailants shot and killed the duo and fled around 8:30 pm.   The deceased driver has been identified as Leisangthem Sanjit Singh, a resident of Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai in Imphal West. The slain former PREPAK-VC chief, hailing from Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai, joined the outfit about three decades back.   People in the Manipur Rifles complex were celebrating Lai Haraoba festival when the killing took place. Sources believed the attackers took advantage of the festive occasion while carrying out the fatal attack.  The police said they have started investigation into the incident.   On December 15, 2014, Nabachandra and finance secretary of PREPAK-VC had laid down arms before the Manipur government along with  a large number of leaders and cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KK-Nganba) and KCP (MC) Nongrenkhomba.
