Suspected Manipur-bound pistols intercepted in Chümoukedima

Small arms, suspected to be destined for Manipur was intercepted in Chümoukedima, in two separate incidents on August 13. The catch, which was not officially disclosed by the police, included 14 country-made pistols of various calibres. Two persons were arrested alongwith the weapons in connection with the two incidents.

In the first incident, which occurred around 2-2:30 pm near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, 9 pistols were recovered from a 30 year-old man, who was said to have been travelling in an autorickshaw, at a mobile vehicle checkpost (MVCP) jointly set up by the Assam Rifles and police. The accused initially claimed to be a former member of one the Naga Political Groups only to retract his statement at the police station. 

The second occurred around 10:00 pm at an MVCP set up by the police near Chathe Bridge, Chümoukedima. Five pistols were recovered from a man travelling a taxi en route to Manipur. He was said to be in his fifties. 

Affiliations of both the arrested individuals were still to be established and investigation was on.
