Kohima, September 30 (MExN): The culmination programme of Sustainable and Ecosystem Management (SLEM) Project, UNDP and Government of Nagaland was held on September 28 at the Conference Hall, Hotel Japfü organized by Soil and Water Conservation Department.
Pankaj Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Nagaland & Chairman PSC opined that he was impressed with the SLEM objectives such as increasing the tree cover, improving the income of farmers, maintenance of riparian buffer zones, active participation of women in Land Use Planning etc. He was of the opinion that SLEM Project has laid to an important foundation for all the follow up projects.
The guest of honour, Preeti Soni, Programme Head, Energy & Environment Unit, UNDP, New Delhi appraised the gathering about the works carried out through the UNDP programme such as Land Use Planning, Jhum Resource Management Committee, formulation of Land Use Policy, Livelihood Promotional Activities which has not only benefited Nagaland state alone but the whole of NER towards sustainability. She also mentioned that SLEM project has been recognized among 25 best projects under Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-UNDP Programme.
Highlights of SLEM Project “Sustainable land and ecosystem management in shifting cultivation areas of Nagaland for ecological and livelihood security” were projected through power point presentation by S.N Singh, Additional Director & HoD and Hetoho Y Swu, Deputy Director, Department of Soil & Water Conservation, Nagaland. It may be stated that the SLEM was launched during 2009 and culminated on July 31, 2017 with the objective of addressing land degradation, livelihood and environmental consideration.
T. Imkonglemba IAS, Principal Secretary & APC, chair of the programme delivered the keynote address; welcome address was given by T. Nungsang Ao, Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Soil & Water Conservation and vote of thanks by Viliehu Nguzhü, Project Director Department of Soil & Water Conservation.
