
Kohima, August 8 (DIPR): Along with the rest of the 500 AMRUT cities spread across 363 districts in India, Kohima city also attended the launching of ‘Swachh Survekshan-2017’ kick-off workshop through video conference at NIC video conference attached to Deputy Commissioner’s office, Kohima on August 6.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor IAS along with Secretary Urban Development, Ahola Those, Administrator KMC, Kovi Meyase, officers from Urban Development and District Administration and other officials concerned attended the launching programme.
Minister for Urban Development, GoI, M. Venkaiah Naidu launched the “Swachh Survekshan-2017’ in New Delhi to assess and rank 500 cities and towns based on levels of sanitation and efforts made by respective urban local bodies and also to capture progress towards achieving ‘Open Defecation Free’ status. The Minister also released various publications and mobile application to help the 500 cities and towns prepare for the survey to be conducted in January next year.
The Minister informed the city officials that cities will be ranked based on the reports by urban local bodies on the progress made towards construction of toilets, feedback of citizens and independent observation of sanitation levels. He also felicitated the RWAs, corporate donors to Swachh Bharat Mission, municipal workers for their exemplary contribution, TV actresses for their contribution towards generation of awareness about cleanliness.
Earlier in Kohima city, Deputy Director from Urban Development, Tarachu Fithu gave two PowerPoint presentations on the concept of Swachh Survekshan-2017 and Landfill Bio-mining in Kumbakonam. Tarachu also informed that Swachh Survekshan is basically a conduct of survey for ranking of clean cities across India with the objective to create awareness about the importance of working together towards making our towns and cities better places to live in.
The first round of Swachh Survekshan was held during the month of January 2016, where 73 cities were ranked. Kohima city ranked 69 then, he informed. Tarachu further informed that the second round of Swachh Survekshan will be held in January 2017 for which the kick-off workshop has been convened, which will be followed by a sensitization programme in different wards under Kohima city.
