Dimapur, February 2 (MExN): An awareness talk on the topic ‘Cervical and Breast Cancer’ was jointly organised by ICFAI University Nagaland (IUN) and Sovima Health Sub-Centre Management Committee at ICFAI University, Dimapur on January 31.

Resource persons for the day were Dr Rushulo Khing (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) of Olive Christian Hospital & Research Centre (OCHRC), Dimapur and Dr Suiyibangbe (Surgeon) of Eden Medical Centre, Dimapur.

Dr Khing spoke about ‘cervical cancer’ which occurs in the cells of the cervix-the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina and Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, which play a role in causing most of the cervical cancer.

The cancer mostly develops around the age group of 30 years and above. The risk of developing cervical cancer can be reduced by having screening tests and receiving a vaccine that protects against HPV infection. It can be detected through PAP Smear Test that can detect precancerous conditions of the cervix, so they can be monitored or treated in order to prevent cervical cancer. During a pap test, your doctor scrapes and brushes cells from your cervix, which are then examined in a lab.

Talking about the prevention Dr Khing explained about the HPV Vaccine that can be given 2 to 3 times as a dose which will cost Rs 3,000-4,000. The cervical cancer vaccine can be most effective during the age group of 9-14 years of age.

With regard to ‘Breast Cancer’ Dr Suiyibangbe talked about remedies for its prevention and the symptoms of breast cancer. According to him, breast cancer is a cancer that forms in the cells of the breasts. Some of the most common symptoms of breast cancer include a lump or tissue that feels different and has developed recently, breast pain, red skin over your entire breast, swelling in all or part of your breast, a nipple discharge other than breast milk, bloody discharge from the nipple, sudden change in the shape or size of your breast.

Questions were raised by faculties, students and committee members after the talk. The seminar was attended by the students, faculties of ICFAI University, Chairman and Committee members of Sovima Health Sub-centre. Imtisangba Aier, Committee member and Holi J Ayemi, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science ICFAI University Nagaland (IUN) chaired the session.
