Dimapur, November 17 (MExN): The Department of English, ICFAI University Nagaland conducted a talk on the topic “Recentering the ‘Centre’” with author and poet Dr Easterine Kire as the resource person on November 17. Kire raised a concern on the idea of the ‘centre’ and emphasized the urgency of coming out from the oblivious notion of ‘mainstream’.
She pointed out the issue of self-victimization saying “When you cling on to the victimhood, you are holding a part of life while excluding the rest.” Kire highlighted that it is high in time when Nagas should choose to liberate and stop victimizing themselves especially in terms of literary works, thereby embracing the self and expressing it in literature as produced by Nagas.
She expressed the discontentment that people often inflict upon themselves while trying too hard to get to the centre. Kire concluded by saying that there is a conscious effort in her recent works to put back the pride that comes from her cultural background.
Sentilemla Lemtur, Department of English, ICFAI University Nagaland in a press release said that the discourse was a successful one with the students and teachers adding in with questions and further discussions.
