Crumbling state government-run buildings has remained a recurrent feature of the public narrative in Nagaland. Ill-maintained housing for state government employees, uninhabitable hospital buildings, ageing government offices, ramshackle school buildings and so on has been the general perception of government infrastructure here over the years; in stark contrast to the palatial offices of authority in the state capital and a handful of district administrative headquarters.
The spectre of such derelict state infrastructure one day giving way took shape today at a government office. It occurred at a supposedly not so prominent Tamlu ADC sub-divisional headquarters in Longleng district.
According to reports, which were later confirmed, the ceiling of the office chamber of the ADC, Tamlu caved in on May 1. Fortunately, it claimed no casualty.
The ceiling fell when attendants were going through the daily routine of readying the office for the day’s business.
“The incident occurred when the peon was readying the ADC’s office chamber. He was setting the room, opening the windows when the ceiling creaked,” said a Tamlu resident. The person, who confirmed the incident occurring, said it happened at around 9:30 am just as the ADC was about to arrive.
Luckily for the peon, he could scurry out of the room just in time before the entire face of the ceiling came crashing down. Work for the day was said to have carried on without much ado with the ADC conducting business as usual after clearing the debris. The office building is said to be around 30 years old.
