Taxi and bus drivers sensitized on road safety

Kohima, January 16: “You are carrying someone’s life while driving,” said W. Honje Konyak, Deputy Commissioner Kohima during the sensitization and orientation training to taxi and bus drivers in Kohima to commemorate the 25th National Road Safety Week 2014. Under the theme, “You First” the Transport Commissioner, Motor Vehicles Department organized the awareness program on January 15 at the Zonal Council Hall Kohima.

Honje Konyak shared on three major points to maintain road safety that is to avoid using mobile phones while driving, to learn traffic rules and to avoid alcohol. Konyak further requested the driving community to tackle and discuss such issues. Pukhavi Sema, RTO, Kohima chaired the event while the sensitization awareness was facilitated by Mhilite Kapfo, DSP (Traffic), Kohima and Tatong, Senior MVI, Kohima. The facilitators shared on basic traffic rules, road signs, hand signals, rules on road safety and crucial acts and laws in India for safe road safety. “Despite trainings, accidents cannot be prevented unless the driver changes his or her attitude. There needs to be a change in the driver’s attitude,” said Mhilite Kapfo.

In India, one person is killed every six minutes due to rash driving. Atleast 1,20, 000 people are killed and 5, 50,000 are injured every year in road accidents.
