C Tekalong Lusang of Liz Woodland School came out top of a pool of 50 competitors to win the 1st Spelling Bee organised by the Dorians Society on June 25. Md Marzaqur Rahman of Christian Higher Secondary School finished second, followed by Manchem Chang of St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in third. They won cash prize of Rs 5000, Rs 3000 and Rs 2000, respectively, along with certificates.

The inter-school spelling competition for class 7-9 was open to schools from Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima and was held at the DBIdl Building, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Dimapur. The competitors were from 20 private and 5 government schools. Each school had two competitors.

The competition was presided over by three judges and two pronouncers. Each competitor was given 2 minutes to spell a given word with the choice to solicit the word meaning and an example of its use/function in a sentence.

The spelling bee was organised as part of the Dorians Society’s 25th founding anniversary tentatively scheduled to be celebrated by the end of the year. However, given the enthusiastic response from schools and students, the organisers expressed optimism that the competition would become an annual affair, provided circumstances, and more importantly, resources allow.

Dorians Society was first formed in 1997 under the initiative of young enthusiasts willing to see transformation take place within their society. The society primarily focused on sports programmes in their initial stages but has branched out their initiatives to other social activities as well.
