Telangana agitation: Osmania students boycott exams

HYDERABAD, January 20 (TNN): The Telangana agitation has once again intensified as hundreds of Osmania University and its constituent colleges boycotted their Masters level semester examinations in support of a separate state on Thursday here. (Read: Tension in OU as students seek exam deferment) Hundreds of students of Osmania University and its constituent colleges including Nizam College and Koti Women’s College boycotted PG semester examinations in support of Telangana agitation at 10 am. The authorities however maintained that the examinations of MA, M Sc, M Com and MCA courses would continue as per the schedule.
According to the university students, around 90 per cent of the 34,746 students under Osmania University boycotted their examinations. The students tore answer scripts and hall tickets at 137 examination centres. Osmania University officials hinted that the PG examinations could be postponed. With just 5 per cent of their PG students appearing for the examinations scheduled for Thursday, the OU authorities held a meeting on the campus to discuss the postponement of the exams.The students of the OU campus- the nerve centre of Telangana politics- are demanding a postponement of the examinations in order to arm-twist the central government to table a bill in the parliament supporting Telangana state formation. OU-Joint Action Committee (OU-JAC) has put forward a demand for tabling the bill in the budget session scheduled for February. Initially, Osmania University’s semester examinations were to be held in November.
