DIMAPUR, FEB 17 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) today clarified on the need to distinguish between legal and illegal tax. “It is requested that the payee(s) be aware and ascertain as to who is a legal collector and who is an illegal and unauthorized collector so that such frauds can be penalized according to the law of the land,” Y Vikheho Awomi, Chairperson of the civic body said.
This clarification comes in the wake of the Village Chiefs Federation appeal to the Governor of Nagaland asking him to curb heavy tax collection. The DMC, while saying that it is empowered by the government to collect taxes, has put the shoulder of moral responsibility on the tax payee to differentiate between legal and illegal tax collectors.
“Other than this, the DMC cannot and shall not be held responsible in any way for illegal collection by other entities or the shortsightedness of the payee(s),” a clarification said. If ‘nefarious activities’ are carried out at any DMC toll collection gate as alleged, DMC member in charge of tolls and fees Pukhavi is to be informed at phone number 9436002959. The DMC office may also be notified at phone number 232610 “on the spot with proof and evidence” so that immediate action may be taken.
