Dimapur, September 1 (MExN): In commemoration with the Year of Farmers 2006-2007, the Tenang Minor Irrigation Project was commissioned in Mon District with M.C. Konyak, Parliamentary Secretary for Irrigation & Flood Control as Chief Guest and, Imtilemba, Minister for Transport & Comm., Labour & Empl. As Guest of Honour on August 30,stated a press release. The function was chaired by B.Thawang Konyak, Secretary to the Govt. of Nagaland, IFC Dept. The program was attended by a host of Govt. Officials, besides Presidents of the Konyak Union and Konyak Students’ Union, Chairman, Mon Town Council, senior citizens of Mon Town, villages, beneficiaries and farmers of Leangnyu and Lonkei villages. In his address, the chief guest expressed that the farmer should opt for multiple cropping with no less emphasis on winter crops, to sustain the ever growing economic condition of the people. He also made aware of the need to exploit the full potential of such development brought forth by the department concerned, and seek suitable ways to levy water tax for such users to make the project more effectively utilize, so that the future of such affectivity is felt by one and all.
Addressing and exhorting the gathering, the guest of honour urged the farmers of the area to work for their economic upliftment. He also congratulated the rank and files of the IFC Dept. for successful endeavor. The Addl. Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Anden Konyak was also appreciative of the IFC Dept. for taking up such innovative developmental activities which should bring a change to a more productive growth for the people of that particular area. He encouraged the farmers to prefer modern technology farming and do away with the primitive system of farming.
Pastor Leangnyu Baptist Church invoked the blessings of God, Er. Hutoi Sema, EE IFC, Mon gave a brief technical report on the project, President of WUA (Water Users Association) Lonkei and Tingam of Leangnyu village spoke on behalf of the Farmers and beneficiaries and finally the vote of thanks was proposed by Er. Wapang.
