Dimapur, October 4 (MExN): The Literary Club (Department of English) of Tetso College, Sovima donated 305 books to the library of the Central Jail, Dimapur, on October 4.
The book donation drive, organised by the club to benefit the library, commemorated the Silver Jubilee of Tetso College.
The library was initiated in the year 2017 under the leadership of the Jailer, Dr Oben Yanthan, and has around 3000 books, a press release from the College stated.
The Literary Club believed in the revolutionary potential a habit in reading can bring about. To facilitate the experience for the inmates of the Jail, its members undertook the drive during the months of September and October, which included collecting books and magazines from the faculty, staff, students, and various well wishers of Tetso College, it added.
The members of the Literary Club also interacted with Dr Yanthan, who debunked many of the myths about prisons propagated in media. This enabled the students to gain a better understanding of the entire process and how prisons are actually effective in bringing about a positive change in the lives of the inmates.
As part of the dialogue, Dr Yanthan encouraged the Literary Club to continue with their extension activities within the prison which would benefit the society as a whole.
“Education is all about giving back to the society in as many ways possible,” said Dr Yanthan and acknowledged the club and the management of Tetso College for their contribution.
