Genesis 3:15 is known as the First Messianic Promise... "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
Sin entered mankind when our root and lineage disobeyed God. The sin in the garden infected and affected the entire human race. Each person emerges with the taint of sin and the tendency to sin. We are sinners by nature and by choice. We suffer the consequences of the Fall by living in a fallen world. We suffer from the sins of others and our own sins.
However there is hope, a hope certified by a promise and grace given to our parents, Adam and Eve, after their far-reaching act of disobedience in the garden of Eden. God has a plan of salvation for us. His redemptive plan started from the very beginning of time in Genesis.
In the war between man and his adversary, the seed of Eve would bruise Satan’s head. ‘Seed’ is expressed by the singular “He.” The ultimate conflict is between the serpent and the descendant of Eve. This descendant is Jesus Christ, the Messiah, who came to “save his people from their sins.”
The serpent (Satan), on one hand, and the man and the woman, on the other, are as two great nations embarking on a great struggle, a struggle that will find its conclusion only by an act of some distant "seed" or "offspring."
There is an age long spiritual warfare and hostility between Satan and the people of God. The “seed” of the woman, Jesus Christ, the Messiah was conceived through the Holy Spirit. When the Messiah was born Satan tried to destroy him through Herod the Great. Satan failed but he did not give up and then he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. Satan failed again. During the crucifixion, for a time it appeared Satan had succeeded. But Christ, by his life, death and resurrection dealt a mortal blow to the head of Satan. God so ordered it, that the salvation of man could only be brought about by the death of Christ. The heel of our blessed Lord was bruised, i.e. he suffered temptation and persecution. However, the “bruising” of the heel is not fatal, but “crushing” the head (actual translation) is. The curse that the snake will crawl on his belly means he will "eat dust," an expression of "total defeat."
We are victorious over Satan, over sin and death, and have everlasting life through Jesus Christ.
