In today’s fast-moving digital world, social media has become an important part of everyday life, especially among young people. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube are widely used for communication, entertainment, and sharing information. However, these platforms are also bringing noticeable changes to the reading habits of the younger generation. In earlier times, students spent more time reading books, newspapers, magazines, and novels. Reading was considered one of the best ways to gain knowledge and improve language skills. Today, many young people prefer scrolling through short videos, reels, memes, and online posts rather than reading lengthy texts. As a result, the habit of deep reading is gradually declining among students and youth.

Social media has both positive and negative effects on reading habits. On the positive side, it has made information easily accessible. Students can now read online articles, e-books, blogs, and educational materials anytime and anywhere. Many literary pages and online communities encourage young readers to explore literature and develop an interest in writing. Social media has also given young writers a platform to share poems, stories, and creative ideas with a wider audience.

Despite these advantages, excessive use of social media is affecting concentration and patience among readers. Many students find it difficult to focus on long academic texts or novels because they are more accustomed to short and quick digital content. Experts believe that continuous scrolling and screen addiction reduce attention span and weaken critical thinking skills. Instead of reading complete books, many students now depend on short summaries and simplified online content.

Teachers and parents have also expressed concern over the decreasing interest in traditional reading habits. They believe that spending too much time on social media not only affects academic performance but also limits imagination and creativity. Reading books helps individuals improve vocabulary, communication skills, and emotional understanding, which cannot be fully achieved through short online content alone.

However, social media itself is not entirely responsible for this change. The way people use technology plays an important role. If used wisely, social media can become a valuable educational tool. Students should learn to balance entertainment with meaningful reading activities. Educational institutions can also encourage reading culture through digital libraries, book discussions, and literary programs.

Social media has significantly transformed the reading habits of today’s generation. While it offers quick access to information and new opportunities for creativity, it has also reduced interest in deep and thoughtful reading. Therefore, young people must use social media responsibly and continue developing healthy reading habits for their intellectual and personal growth.
