DIMAPUR, DEC 14 (MExN): The Convener State Bank of India organized a State Level Bankers’ Committee meeting on December 14 at Hotel Japfu, Kohima. Representatives of all the Banks working in the state were present while Alemtemshi Jamir Agriculture Production Commissioner, Menukhal John, OSD Finance and other officials represented the Government of Nagaland.
Home Minister Thenucho assured the Banks full security for the bank’s staff and expressed willingness to examine issues related to faster transportation of currency to the chest branches, stated P.K.Baglany, Deputy Manager, SBI Regional Office in a press communiqué.
Thenucho requested the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) to ensure timely disbursal of credit facility, and urged the banks to speed up the recovery and ensured formulation of new scheme for backyard financing.
While informing the forum about holding of a North East Agro Expo in February 2006, APC Alemtemshi Jamir asked for full participation of the Banks. The progress of various Government sponsored schemes, credit to agricultural sector, Small Scale Industries and Small Business Sectors etc was reviewed and strategies for achievement of targets for 2005-06 were discussed.
The General Manager, RBI has stressed the need of opening bank branches in the 21 unbanked blocks of the state. 17 VDBs are financed to for extending credit to village people. NABARD was regulated to form scheme for tenant farmers which needed support from Government.
Government agencies help was sought in recovering loans in priority sector and agricultural loans while increasing rural credit and enhanced linkage for Self Help Groups (SHGs) was stressed, stated Dy. Manager.
Many technological initiatives have also been taken to bring latest banking facilities to the people of Nagaland. Some of the major steps taken are the conversion of 5 branches on Core Banking Solution and Internet Banking and ATM service at Dimapur and Kohima by the State Bank of India stated P.K. Baglany. The agriculture and housing sectors are being powered by extension of KCCs to pensioners and housing loans under special Tribal Plus. Traders meet are also organized by the State Bank of India to promote borrowers adequately, stated Baglany.
