A think-tank on leadership issues in Nagaland sponsored by North East Alliance for Leadership and Social Transformation (NEALEAST) in collaboration with the Mokokchung Town Baptist Church (MTBA) Youth Department was held on January 8 at Conference Hall, MTBA.

The seminar was organised with an aim to discuss and deliberate on leadership issues in relation to corruption in Nagaland. Toshi Sanglir, Youth Secretary, ABAM and Youth President, NBCC presented on Corruption and its face value where he talked about the meaning, types and levels of corruption, with reference to Nagaland state.

The talk was followed by group discussion and presentation of findings. Some of the findings were the think-tank found that corruption is a conscious or unconscious action which has become a way of life in the Naga society. The House also found that corruption in Naga society, unfortunately, has become socially accepted because of the lack of accountability, absence of strong anti-corruption mechanism.

On the question of how corruption has come to be so much accepted in the Naga society, the House found that there is a twisting of language or a euphemism for corruption like the word ‘Side-income’. Besides, the house also found that there is a pressure on the higher-up or those in powers to indulge in corrupt practices, for instance the ‘Chief Guest Culture’ in the Naga society.

The house also deliberated on how to prevent corruption in the society. To this question, the house suggested ‘sensitization about corruption from the grass-root level’, exposure of corrupt practices in the society through the use of mass-media; the house also strongly felt the need for more watch-dogs like youth organizations or role-models in the society. Moreover, it also found that there is a strong need to focus on comprehensive education for the future generation with updated and modernized curriculum in line with societal changes.
