•-"Anything a man can do, women can too". A line used in this day & age of equality between the sexes. Women have come a long way from the steel corsets to the shorts & T-shirted gals today. This liberation from feminine dress restrictions has not only given them the freedom of overcoming cumbersome obstacles, but has also provided them an opportunity to let out their aggressive side, an outlet for the benefit of sports. Women may not be better than men, but they are certainly making a go for it. There are Women’s football leagues throughout the country, even annual national competition that resulted in a national body for Women's Football being formed.
Kohima will be witnessing for the first time a 2 day Football Exhibition match for Women (under16) under the aegis of the Department of Youth Resources & Sports to be held on the 27th -28th of May 2011 at the Local Ground with participating teams from Assam, Manipur & Nagaland. This event will give us an opportunity to the women players from three North-Eastern states & could well become a trendsetter.
Team Nagaland will be represented by the much talked about impressive players from the prestigious IGS Academy which is under the supervision of Mr. Teisobou Sekhose, DSO, Kohima & Administrator, IGS. Though lacking in exposure, the Academy ladies with provision of excellent training by highly qualified coaches are already making waves for their steady & alert minds coupled with physical agility & strength. Truly, this event will prove to be a contact point between professional football players, Exhibition Visitors and the Public/Fans.
No doubt, the sheer task of organizing such an event might run into budgeting difficulties without sufficient recognition & funding with the biggest expenses related to travel, ground works, equipments etc. Funding, being the major hurdle because as far as to my knowledge, with very few exceptions women’s sports are not afforded the same resources as men receive. But just maybe, the spirit of the game will be too high to be dampened by lack of facilities and will not bring any blemish to the event.
A small step for Women's Sports- a Giant step for Women's Football-this unique event will form a focal point & educational resource for the promotion of the women’s game. With good sportsmanship as an official tenet of goal, pure joy of the game & natural respect between players, this event will speak volumes for the organizing Department and the individuals involved.
Tons of appreciation to the organizing Department/Sponsors/Well-wishers who will surely delight supporters, silence critics and win a whole load of public support. And to all the denizens of Kohima- “BE THERE FOR THE SPECIAL EVENT"
ELENA, Kohima
