Three arrested for assault in Peren

Three persons were arrested in Peren in connection to an alleged assault of a man in Khelma village. The accused were apprehended by the Assam Rifles on May 25. 

According to the Peren police, the assault occurred on May 23 in Khelma where a 34 year-old man identified as Benjamin was allegedly assaulted by three cadres of the GPRN/NSCN over a “tax related” issue. 

Assam Rifles personnel stationed at Ahthibung apprehended the three on May 25 and handed over to the police. They were identified as 2nd Lieutenant Nzuakam, Sgt Maj Daniel and Razou Peyu Sitang. They were booked under sections 324, 325/34 and section 7 of the Nagaland Security Regulation, 1962, the police informed. 

Meanwhile, the Zeliang-Kuki Gaon Budha Union (ZKGBU), Ahthibung Sub Division, issued a press release condemning the May 23 incident. “This act of inhumanity is highly condemned by all people of the Kuki- Zeliang society,” said the release, while urging the “Zeliangrong region authorities” of the GPRN/NSCN to refrain from activities detrimental to peace in the area. 

According to the ZKGBU, 4-5 persons were involved in the alleged assault. The incident occurred around 2:00pm on May 23 and the victim was left in the village cemetery area after the assault. The villagers were able to reach the victim and get medical help only after the assaulters left, it said.

While it appealed the security forces to conduct frequent patrols in the area, it appreciated the action of the Assam Rifles personnel and the police for arresting the accused.
