A public meeting on “crime against women and social evils” was held in Mokokchung today at the town square in the wake of the rape of a minor girl recently. The meeting was jointly organized by Ao Senden, Watsü Mungdang, Ao Kaketshir Mungdang, Mokokchung Town Aor Telungjem, All Ward Union Mokokchung, and Mokokchung Town Lanur Telungjem.
The meeting adopted a three-point resolution, which was proposed by a resolution committee comprising of representatives from the aforementioned bodies.
The three-point resolution included proposal for formation of a new organization to fight crime against women and social evils. This organization is to be empowered by all the Mokokchung town based civil organizations.
The second resolution was that no one shall “protect the culprit” in any rape case. Further, it was resolved that anybody found abetting the release of a charge sheeted rapist from jail would be doing so at their own risk and that such persons shall be deprived of all rights in Ao society.
The third resolution was that a “vigilance team” to check crime against women and social evils shall be formed in each of the 18 wards under Mokokchung Town. The proposed “vigilance team” is to be comprised of both male and female members to be appointed by the respective ward authorities. The “vigilance team” is to function under and in cooperation with the ward authority.
