Tikhir students call for ban on Yimchunger conference

Dimapur, Dec 15 (MExN): In a pronounced dimension to the long-standing Tikhir-Yimchunger identity issue, the Tikhir Students Union demands from the state government that a scheduled conference of Yimchunger Students Union to be held at Shamator town be banned. The TSU forwards these reasons: that Shamator town is ‘purely’ a Tikhir area; that the Tikhir community of Shamator “donated” the land to the state government and not the Yimchunger community and that no assembly can be held within the Tikhir area without the ‘concern’ of the owning community. The TSU also cautions that failure to intervene in the highlighted matter would place the authorities in liability should any untoward developments surface.

A TSU representation addressed to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Shamator informed of a general conference to be held at Shamator by the Yimchunger Students Union (YAA). “… Shamator Town is purely Tikhir area under Tikhirs’ jurisdiction. Therefore, in Shamator administrative HQ, no other tribe can hold any conference/association without the concern of the Tikhirs. The Tikhirs of Shamator village has donated the land to the Government but not to the Yimchunger in any manner. So, in this regard, we request your high authority to ban the Yimchunger Students Union (YAA) General Conference at Shamator Town” stated the representation appended by TSU President P Limtsi, General Secretary T Asuthong and Vice President R Daniel.

The union asks the concern authority to take the matter seriously and initiate positive steps as early as possible by intervening into the issue. Failure to do the needful would mean the authority will be held responsible if any untoward incident takes place in this regard.
