Timber transportation suspended owing to ‘unwarranted taxes’

Dimapur, June 20 (MExN): Even as the scourge of unauthorised collection of tax by various elements has led to suspension of truckers from entering Nagaland, the Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) today decided to suspend transportation of timber with effect from July 5 in protest against unwarranted taxations levied by various organizations.

An NTTU executive meeting along with district unit presidents held today at Tourist Lodge, Dimapur lamented over what it termed “excessive imposition of taxation” on the timber traders by various organizations despite clear directive from the concerned authorities. Taking into consideration of the predicament affecting the Union, NTTU has resolved to suspend all movement of timbers from forest with effect from July 5.

The Union has, therefore, urged the different government agencies besides underground groups to consider relaxation of taxation to the minimum, stating that under the prevailing situation the Union would be compelled to suspend all movement of timber. The suspension of timber movement, according to an estimate, would have severe implications on the revenue from timber traders.

After thorough deliberation, the house agreed to pay only the central tax for each trip to the different underground factions. The issue in question was earlier issued by the concerned authorities, through a notification, that taxes would be levied only by the central authorities and directed that none should charge taxes from the traders. The Union, however, observed that taxations by various agencies continued unabated despite clear directives from the authorities.

NTTU for hassle free transportation outside NE region

Besides, the house has urged the state government to facilitate hassle free road transportation of goods outside the Northeast region. In this connection, the Union has appealed the state government take up the matter with neighboring states and lift restrictions on the movement of timber, especially in view of the limitations imposed by the Railways for timber carriage.

Transportation of timber by rail has been precarious for major dealers as the services are limited to quarterly basis viz. once in three months. The house was of the opinion that lifting of restrictions by roadways would enable small time dealers to transport goods to various destinations.

Among others who were present in the meeting included Sany Dukru, president Phek district, N John Zeliang, president Peren district, John Sekhose, NTTU Kohima in-charge, and Huska Sumi, Dimapur district vice president.
