Dimapur, March 23 (MExN): The Konyak Union, Tobu rejects what it called the “fractional adjustment of Tobu village and Tobu HQ and deleting the nomenclature of Tobu administrative unit” and has called for immediate redress. Failure for which there will be “bloodshed”, the KU warned in a letter addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary & Commissioner, Nagaland.
An emergency meeting was called under the aegis of the KU Tobu, on March 21 at Tobu, to discuss matters relating to the latest delimitation proposal of the government. The meeting resolved that readjustment of Tobu HQ and Tobu village under Mopong circle will “cause the breakdown of geographical features, public inconvenience, natural barriers and others like tradition and customary practices.”
The delimitation proposal order of the government to delete Tobu A/C from the constituencies “is against the wishes and opinion of the people” and the plight of the public should be kept in view, that the nomenclature of the constituency should under no circumstances be changed, stated the letter appended by KU Tobu President SB Pongba and General Secretary C Nyakhu.
“The government should not only keep the political scenario of the state but should consider the case of Tobu as it has its own history from forefathers till date. So, delimitation proposal should be made with special care and concern for Tobu A/C for the welfare and interest of the people” it stated. The KU also made known the stand that the people of Tobu would remain under one stand and voice. “If the government fails to take appropriate steps, it will only invite bloodshed and non-cooperation to the government and the consequences of which the government will be responsible” it stated and requested to take immediate steps considering the above-mentioned points at the earliest possible date.
Also, Aboi rejects the draft proposed “under any ground reality.” A note from Aboi KU President Yohan Konyak and Aboi Area Students’ Union President Manpon Changkap questioned the commission “about their knowledge of the age-old history of the place and the people.” The two organizations pointed out that there are thousands of youths who “cannot exercise their adult franchise, as they cannot be accommodated in the electoral census.” This is because the government demands limited percentage to be included, the two Aboi organizations explained. Cautioning that the delimitation is only the tip of iceberg for a social upheaval, the organizations stated that there is a threat to social order in near future, with this proposal. Taking the account of the whole social unrest, the unions demand cancellation of the delimitation process.
