1919 - German Communist leader Rosa Luxemburg and her colleague Karl Liebknecht were arrested and shot by soldiers after the failure of a left-wing uprising in Berlin.


1969 - Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 5 launch, together with Soyuz 4 achieving first docking of two unmanned spacecraft in Earth orbit.


1991 - Musician Johnny Cash inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.


1997 - International goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar in court for match-fixing charges.


1997 - Diana visits mine field in Angola.


2001 - Free content encyclopaedia website Wikipedia launches online.


2004 - Bank notes printed with the face of Saddam Hussein ceased to be legal tender in Iraq.


2005 - A U.S. military jury sentenced soldier Charles Graner to 10 years in prison for his role in the abuse of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison.


2006 - The ruler of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, who rebuilt his Gulf Arab state after U.S.-led forces ended Iraq's occupation in 1991, died aged 78.


2009 - A US Airways jet with 155 people on board ditched in the frigid Hudson River off Manhattan after apparently hitting a flock of geese and officials said everyone was rescued.


2013 - Military train crash in Giza, Egypt.
