Top priority for NE Power sector: DoNER Minister

Dimapur | June 2 : Union Minister of DoNER and chairman, North Eastern Council (NEC), BK Handique has said that NEC would give top priority to systems improvement in Power in the North Eastern Region.  “North Eastern Council would give top priority on the schemes submitted by the State Governments in Power Sector for (a) System improvement (upgradation/improvement/construction) of power transmission and distribution lines and Sub-Station and (b) renewable resources of energy, including assistance for implementation of small hydel projects,” the minister said in New Delhi today.
According to press note issued by PA to DoNER, Handique also reminded that the NEC in its 58th Meeting held on February 9, 2010, at Guwahati, concluded that next only to road connectivity, priority should be accorded to harnessing the vast power potential of the Region. It may be mentioned that NEC released Rs.71 crore for Power sector in the North Eastern Region during the year 2010-11.
These include seven projects at a cost of Rs.10.70 crores in Arunachal Pradesh, one Rs. 5.37 crore project in NC Hills District, Assam, a Rs. 5 crore project in Manipur, eight projects in Meghalaya at cost of Rs.17.44 crores, six projects at cost of 7.17 crores in Mizoram, 9 projects in Sikkim at cost of 13.43 crores, one project at Tripura at a cost of Rs.4.79 crores.
Besides, seven schemes in the capacity of 10 KW at a cost of Rs.1.41 crores in Manipur and 10 mini hydel projects at a cost of Rs.1.5 crores in Sikkim have also been sanctioned. Additionally, Rs.4.25 crores have been allotted to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) to prepare Feasibility cum Detailed Project Report for Transmission, Sub – Transmission and Distribution (upto 33 KV) system in the North Eastern Region.
