Tovihoto inspects polytechnic sites

Parliamentary Secretary Tovihoto Ayemi during an inspection to one of the ongoing construction of Government Polytechnic sites on June 25.

Expresses concern over delay in work progress at Sedem and Aboi

Dimapur, June 26 (MExN): Parliamentary Secretary for Technical Education, IT, Science and Taxes, Tovihoto Ayemi inspected the ongoing construction of Government Polytechnic sites at Sedem, Tuensang and Aboi, Mon on June 25 along with departmental officials, contractors, site engineers and architects.

However, the Parliamentary Secretary expressed concern over the slow progress of work at both the sites. The timeframe allotted for completion of the construction for both the Polytechnic sites is 18 months, which expires this December.

Dissatisfied over the work progress, at Sedem, Tovihoto in no uncertain terms told the contractor to finish the work within the allotted timeframe. “We can’t take our own convenient time to construct; it is not a private property. There is a specific time and we should finish in time,” he said. Referring to the contractor’s problem over difficulties faced in procuring construction materials, the Parliamentary Secretary said it was not the Department’s problem and that such reason should not be an excuse for work delays unless there is a genuine problem. “By the end of this year, the construction should finish and be ready for functioning,” Tovihoto said.

The Government Polytechnic Sedem has a total area of 28.38 acres. The construction has been divided into four blocks. Foundation for the entire building is completed and tiebeam for the 2nd block is going on.

On the same day, June 25, the Parliamentary Secretary visited the Government Polytechnic Aboi site. Here the department officials found that there was no progress of work since last December except procuring some construction materials and a few soil leveling. Tovihoto expressed serious concern over the delay in works and called for expediting the construction so that it becomes ready for functioning by next academic year. He appealed the local people to extend their cooperation towards completion of the Polytechnic. “It (Polytechnic) is your property and with your fullest cooperation the construction should finish in time,” he told Aboi elders and leaders.

The site has a total area of 28.26 acres. The building will be two storied and divided into 3 blocks. The first phase of the work is already under construction. Department officials were hopeful that both the Polytechnics at Sedem and Aboi would be fully functional by next academic year.

Director of Technical Education, Athili Kathipri; Deputy Director Vipulhou Lhoungu and Placement Officer, David Tsela accompanied the Parliamentary Secretary during the site visit. Ex-minister, Nyeiwang Konyak was also present when the team visited Polytechnic site at Aboi.

This was stated in a press release issued by Press Secretary to Parliamentary Secretary, Tovihoto Ayemi.
