TR denies 'tax collection' media report

DIMAPUR, APRIL 5 (MExN): Leader of the Opposition, TR Zeliang has issued an open letter to national media outlet Swarajya and its Associate Editor, Jaideep Majumdar seeking clarification on a report it published on April 2 titled ‘NIA’s Naga terror funding probe reveals insidious role of top bureaucrats, politicians and church elders.’

The letter issued by the office of the NLA Leader of Opposition said that the report had accused TR Zeliang of being “personally involved in the collection of taxes on behalf of the NSCN (K) claiming to have gathered the information from NIA, Rangapahar 3 Corps, Kohima Assam Rifles (North) and a central intelligence agency.” Zeliang’s office refuted the allegations and said that this was “a direct challenge” to the former CM’s “integrity and honour.”

Claiming that the “factual position of TR Zeliang with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been misinterpreted, intentionally or otherwise,” it sought clarification at the earliest. The letter meanwhile cautioned that failure to issue a clarification would result in legal recourse for defamation.

“Your failure to clarify on the matter and apologise through leading print, electronic and social media including Swarajya before 6:00pm on Sunday April 8, 2018, as requested, will be viewed in the most serious manner,” the letter added.
