Former Chief Minister and Opposition leader TR Zeliang today suggested to the ongoing State Assembly session to introduce open recruitment system in the State police on the line of Army and Assam Rifles.
Army, Assam Rifles have open recruitment so that the fittest people are employed, he stated.
“But if we allow backdoor appointment and if we allow random appointment we will not get deserving service from our police jawans,” Zeliang said, participating in the general discussion on motion of thanks to the Governor’s Address here today.
“Selection system also should be streamlined and we should go for open recruitment so that we will get the right people for the right job,” he reiterated.
Zeliang pointed out that supply of ration to the jawans is another area of concern where the funds are siphoned off by certain unethical suppliers, thereby depriving the police personnel of their right food share.
Appreciating the performance of jawans, he regretted, “But we are not doing justice to them.”
According to supply order awarded to suppliers, they (jawans) are supposed to get fish, mutton, chicken etc but they never get such in the camp, Zeliang added. “They are provided with vegetables, dal whereas the bill is prepared for mutton, chicken, pork etc and we are spending huge amount,” he alleged.
In other states, the expenditure on jawans by payment of cash is Rs. 1500/1200 but in the form of supply of ration, we are spending more than Rs. 2000, he claimed.
The Opposition leader suggested payment of cash rather than supply of ration to the police personnel. “Every jawan will be happy to accept cash and not in the form of ration supply,” he expressed.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his concluding remarks assured that the government will take corrective measures on the suggestion made by the Opposition leader.
“I think we have to thoroughly check that we provide the best rations, clothing to our jawans,” he said, adding because of the police personnel “we can sleep peacefully and do our activities with peace of mind.”
