In continuation with the interaction carried out by The Morung Express with Kohima citizens on the mounting traffic snarls, its consequences and remedies thereof, Dr Zavise Rume on Sunday suggested that sound pollution act should be strictly implemented in the state. And the traffic cops can begin by arresting those drivers honking unnecessarily in high volume, an unpleasant habit of many drivers, he said.
Taking the example of Shimla, Dr Rume also opined that people going for marketing within the main town should not be allowed to use vehicles. He also felt that the public road should not be exploited for commercial purpose.
Dr Rume further suggested that materials like firewood, timber, stone, etc. should not be allowed to be kept on the public road. “There are too many private properties kept along the public roadside. If found, these materials should be seized straight away without any question or any prior information,” he said.
According to Neizülo Therie, giving proper training to traffic police personnel is the need of the hour. While indicating that inexperienced traffic personnel are also responsible for the traffic congestion, he said experienced traffic personnel should be deployed to man the important areas in the town where there is constant heavy flow of traffic.
Therie also went on to propose that NGOs who have been managing traffic should be given proper training as well.
Alternative route from Lower Chandmari via below Assam Rifles camp through BSF camp towards New Secretariat side should be planned as early as possible for road users of Southern Kohima, Therie also recommended.
For Elu Ndang, the main problem for the ever rising traffic jam is the non adherence to the traffic regulations by the citizens. Parking along the road side has to be relocated by the authorities concerned, he added.
Neibulie Kiewhuo said the district transport office should strictly follow the guidelines for issuing driving license, while observing that most traffic jams occur because of underage and inexperience drivers.
“We need wider road, for which we need wider space,” said Karaiba Chawang to ease traffic congestion.
