Imphal | March 12
Security force averted a major tragedy in Manipur on Thursday, when it recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the roadside in Imphal East district.
Personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad defused the five kg IED packed in zarda container.
Police said that troops of 17 Assam Rifles on foot patrolling discovered the IED planting on the roadside near Seijang village under Lamlai police station of Imphal East district in the morning. The troops immediately halted the traffic on the road as a precautionary measure and called out bomb disposal squad of the state police.
The road was opened only after the IED was defused by the experts, around 11:00 am.
When examined, the IED was found containing five kg of RDX with marbles and nails as splinters, the police added.
It may be mentioned that this is the third time in the recent times where suspected rebels planted IED in the area. On March 7 last, an IED planted by the suspected militants was triggered on the road near Seijang Tera Makhong village.
No casualty was reported in that blast. Few weeks ago, a similar IED explosion had taken place in the area.
