Training for Agronomy, Soil & Water Conservation held

Longleng, March 9 (MExN): A weeklong TOT Training for Agronomy, Soil and Water Conservation which began on March 3 at District Agricultural Officer (DAO) Longleng culminated on March 7.


The training was conducted at two locations on different subject under DAO office- Fostering Climate Change   Resilient Upland Farming Systems in Northeast (FOCUS) Nagaland for Agronomy and Terrace Rice Cultivation and the other on Fostering Climate Resilient Upland Farming Systems in the Northeast (FOCUS) Nagaland for SALT and Soil and Water Conservation Measures. 


The Resource persons for the Agronomy and Terrace Rice Cultivation were Pongkam Phom, Lanuakum and C Amei Phom.


Pongkam Phom imparted training on package of practices for ginger, mustard, banana and upland rice while Lanuakum imparted training on sustainable terrace rice cultivation, nursery preparation for terrace cultivation, paddy cum fish and snail cultivation, terrace design and plot design.


C Amei Phom spoke on nutrients management through azolla and green manuring plants, enriched composting and vermin compost, nursery management of vegetable crops and agro forestry principles for fallow management and insects and diseases management.  


Daniel Phom and Owshing Phuhlom were the Resource persons for the SALT and Soil and Water Conservation Measures. They spoke on Soil and Water Conservation in Jhum Land, SALT Practices Traditional Soil and Water Conservation, Soil and Water Conservation in Current Jhum-I, II, and III,  SALT 1,2,3 and 4, Zabo System, Soil conservation in Settled Agriculture – I, II and II, SALT in Settled Farm, Different Models of SALT, Soil and Water Conservation Practices in Fallow Managements and Different models of SALT and OAT. 


The inaugural program for the training was held on 3rd March where introductory and welcome address was proposed by  Akangtula Jamir DPA FOCUS-IFAD Longleng and  Yongchang Phom DAO and DPM FOCUS-IFAD Longleng respectively. Keynote address was proposed by L Mongsanger Imchen DDAO and Lead Officer FOCUS-IFAD Longleng while S Kakuto Chopy PIT FOCUS-IFAD Nagaland presented a brief note on FOCUS-IFAD. The inaugural program was chaired by Kezhono Kennao DFM FOCUS-IFAD Longleng. 


Other highlights of the training were discussion and interaction, exercise, field visit and demonstration. The TOT will impart the same training to the farmers of the district at the block and village level.
