Training on cultivation of large cardamom and kiwi fruit held

KOHIMA, MAY 14 (MExN): Training on cultivation of large cardamom and kiwi fruit was held on May 13 at Razeba Town Hall, which was attended by farmers from four villages in Razeba area.  

In his keynote address, Moalemba, DHO Phek said that Razeba range is the highest production area of vegetables while specifically mentioning cabbage, which has generated over 2 crores annual income in the recent times. He encouraged the farmers that if they continue to work hard, they can also compete with the other states in terms of vegetable production. He further called upon the farming community to practice organic cultivation and hoped that Razeba Range will lead the whole Nagaland in this regard.

  Additional Secretary for Horticulture, Vechisalu Nukhu stressed that the whole North East is organic by default. Sharing her dream of making Razeba range an organic area, she urged the farmers to continue upholding organic farming. She also appreciated the efforts of the Horticulture Officers in imparting the training and hoped that they will continue to show their concern and help the people of the area even in the days to come.  

In his short speech, Parliamentary Secretary for Higher and Technical Education, Deo Nukhu stressed on taking up alternative farming as well, other than cabbage and potatoes for the economic development of the area. He also asked the participants to make the best use of the training and equip themselves with knowledge in order to carry forward their farming activities.  

Entrepreneur Rekha Rose Dukru highlighted her experiences in Kiwi cultivation and also dwelt upon the healing properties of the fruit. She also urged the farmers to share ideas and advise one another so that they can grow together as farmers. Resource person for the training, Senti Longchar, Assistant Horticulture Officer, Peren spoke about the triple ‘A’ formula to go ahead in life. The triple A, he said, stands for Anywhere, Anyone, Anytime. He also dwelt on the history and origin of kiwi fruit and further stated that Razeba area is suitable for kiwi cultivation. In respect of cardamom, he said, there are nearly 50 varieties of cardamom. Stating that it is a shade loving crop, he also highlighted its economic value apart from kiwi.
