Training on cultivation & management of flowers and vegetables culminates

Kohima, August 10 (MExN): Organised by the Department of Horticulture in collaboration with Saveer Biotech Limited, New Delhi and Meghastar Agro Horti Pvt limited, Guwahati, a two day training programme on cultivation and management of flowers and vegetable under protected condition which began from August 8 culminated at the Conference Hall, Directorate of Horticulture, Kohima on August 9.

A DIPR report stated that Addl. Director of Horticulture, Qhutovi Wotsa, in his key note address, stated that Nagaland has a long way to go in the development of export oriented production; besides having the potential the state is unable to meet the trade policies. He pointed that, Nagaland has the advantage of good climatic conditions and sufficient fertile land which is suitable for cultivation of all kinds of flowers & Vegetables. He apprised the trainees to consider the period of harvesting season so that one can meet the buyers and consumers demand.

To create employment and go green, Wotsa urged all to use fresh flowers instead of artificial flowers at any occasion. He urged the trainees to use optimum chemicals so that it will be beneficial to them and not create health hazard to the buyers or consumers.

He encouraged the trainees to choose the kind of flowers or vegetables which will create avenues and give them economic returns. 

Deputy Director of Horticulture, S. Senka Jamir said that owing to steady increase in demand of flowers, floriculture has become a lucrative business in Horticulture sector. He expressed hope that this training would be a beneficial for enhancing quality and quantity production of flowers and vegetables and eventually help small scale and related horticulture businesses to meet market demand.

The resource persons on the second day of the training were Dr. Hema Kumar Makhure, Saveer Biotech Limited, Delhi and Gunin Roy, Meghastar Agro Horti Pvt Ltd, Guwahati. In the first technical session, the trainees were briefed on the cultivation of Lillium, cultivation practices of Gerbera & Carnation and Cultivation practices of Tomato/cherry tomato followed by second technical session where Management of Poly house was briefed by T. Eluba, Asst. Horticulture Officer.

The training was sponsored under Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), Ministry of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Government of India. Altogether, 80 participants attended the training from all the districts.
