Phek, February 18 (MExN): The Sustainable Development Research Centre (SDRC), Chomoükedima and North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society, Shillong (NERCORMS) organised training cum distribution of bio compost at Thipüzu village, Phek district on February 16.
The initiative is part of the project “Establishment of kiwi orchard with elite planting materials in the North East India” funded by North Eastern Council (NEC), M/DoNER, Government of India, stated a press release received here.
Dr Mechuselie Kehie, Chairman and Director, SDRC facilitated the handover of Rs 3,65,400 to the beneficiaries for site clearance and land development and also distributed 24 metric tons of bio compost for 14 Ha of land earmarked for the second phase of kiwi cultivation. This initiative underscores the commitment of NERCORMS to promoting sustainable agricultural practices while enhancing soil health and fertility in the region.
Sevohu Khamu, a community leader and an expert in kiwi farming, highlighted the significance of this initiative and emphasised the importance of community engagement, knowledge sharing and adoption of scientific guidelines for successful kiwi cultivation.
SDRC officials along with local representatives and farmers visited the field sites to assess the progress of the kiwi cultivation project and interacted with farmers. Altogether 34 participants attended the programme.
