DIMAPUR, MAY 24 (MExN): The Department of Agriculture, District Agriculture Office, Dimapur conducted training cum exhibition programme on millets for farmers of Dimapur district as part of the ‘International Year of Millets’ on May 23. The event was organized to create awareness about millets and encourage farmers to adopt millet cultivation in the District.

During the training programme, Dr Lowrence Kithan, Scientist (Agronomy) AICRP on pigeon pea, NU: SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema was the resource person and he highlighted on the importance, nutritional value and the recommended package of practices for millets. He further added that millets could help tackle challenges of food security as they did not require much care compared to other crops and had less water consumption rate.

Also speaking at the programme, L Mhao Lotha, DAO Dimapur elaborated on the nutritional and health benefits that millets offer. He stated that training and workshops are being organized and conducted not only in Nagaland, but in the entire country as the year 2023 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Millets, following a proposal by the Government of India. He also reminded that millets are ancient grains that mankind has known for centuries.

After the programme, farmers were provided with inputs such as quality seeds of foxtail millets and millet folders. Around 40 farmers actively participated in the event. Different types of varieties of millets and cook millet items were exhibited.
