
Dimapur, October 2 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre organised one-day training on scientific pig farming cum input distribution programme at Lakhuti village Wokha district. The training was imparted on scientific pig farming with improved pig germplasm.
Dr Aabhon Yanthan, Scientist ICAR Nagaland Centre exhorted the tribal farmers to take up the challenge and make Nagaland self sufficient in pork production. He said that Naga society has to come out with their own solution for fulfilling their requirement.
r Mahak Singh, Scientist briefed the farmers about importance of pig breeding along with fattening. He further said that it is important to produce our own pork for safety and health of Naga people. Dr Mahak informed the farmers about importance of scientific pig farming and adopting the latest technologies like artificial insemination in pig. The importance of selection of good breed for pig farm was also highlighted.
Dr Thungben Yanthan, Additional Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland highlighted the importance of biosecurity measures to avoid spread of African swine fever. Dr Thungben told the farmers about yearly vaccination of pig against classical swine fever.
Assistant Conservator of Forest, Wokha also addressed the gathering and urged the farmers to adopt the technologies spread by ICAR Nagaland Centre.
Dr H Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre informed the farmers to adopt scientific pig farming with full dedication. He further informed that Nagaland need approximately 15 lakh pigs, however, Nagaland has only four lakh pig population. Dr Kalita asked the farmers to cooperate with the ICAR and other government department for making Nagaland self sufficient.
The 60 tribal farmers were provided with 60 Rani piglets along with 60 bags of pig starter feed. The programme was implemented under Tribal Sub-Plan of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam. ICAR Team also acknowledged the Dr S Hazarika and Dr VK Mishra for their support to Nagaland farmers.
The Head GB of Lakhuti expressed his gratitude to ICAR for implementing such project in his village. He informed the gathering that they will successfully implement the project, stated a press release from IACR Nagaland.
