PHEK (MExN): A five day departmental training programme was conducted at Phek town from August 23 to 27 last for the primary, elementary teachers of Phek district. The training was conducted to acquaint the teachers with the new method of teaching and on the newly developed SCERT’s textbooks, especially on class I and 2.

Altogether, 53 teachers attended the training, according to SCERT Director Vipralhou Kesiezie.

The training commenced with a session on Integrated approach where the resource person stated that a child learns best in an integrated/holistic approach as he does not encounter thing in a segregated manner as in English, Social Studies, Science and Mathematics etc.

A very simple example was given, where the resource person analyzed a child buying sweets from a shop. “The child takes money and goes to the shop, communicates with the shopkeeper and buys the sweets. This integrated/holistic approach can be broken down with money as math, shop and shopkeeper as social studies, communication as English and sweets as science”, the Director said.

In this case every subject is integrated. Hence a child learns better when they are taught in an integrated approach rather than teaching them in subject wise which is time consuming and traditional based.

The resource person further stressed that a major concept “New Pedagogy” is introduced after a gap of more than a decade, as there is explosion in knowledge in this fast changing world.

“Therefore, the SCERT has come up with this new approach in our textbooks on experimental basis this current year before it is too late for our State to catch up with the rest of the world”, Kesiezie said adding that the SCERT also felt that the teachers and students should catch up with the rest of the world.

Exhaustive training was given to the trainee teachers on content and methodology. They were exposed to areas like New Pedagogy, psychology, teaching learning materials, concept of session plan and method of teaching Science, Social Studies, Mathematics and English. The training ended with a short valedictory programme where the DIS Phek gave a short speech encouraging the teachers to give importance to training and to take advantage of it.

The DIS further requested them to take their profession seriously by showing their dedication towards it.

The Director maintained that due to the huge percentage of untrained teachers and lack of clear policy in recruitment of teachers “our education system is suffering.”

Hence, he said, exhaustive training is required in every district especially in this latest trend to teaching- learning approach.

SCERT also conducted similar training programme at Dimapur, Peren and Kohima. As per the action plan of the SCERT, every district on Nagaland will be covered by the end of this year.
