Training on ‘promotion of pig breeders in Nagaland’ held

Medziphema, June 19 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre at Medziphema organised five-day training programme on ‘promotion of pig breeders in Nagaland’ under Tribal Sub-Plan from June 13 to 17. For the training, 25 pig breeders from Kiphire, Kohima, Dimapur, Phek, Chümoukedima, Niuland, Mokokchung and Longleng were selected through specified criteria, stated a press release received here. 

Speaking on the inaugural day, Dr H Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre emphasised on need of sufficient pig breeders in Nagaland to meet the demand of the state. He informed the participants that roughly 20 lakh of pig population is needed in state to sustainably feed meet the pork demand of Nagaland state and this cannot be met by government alone.

The chief guest, Dr Giris Patil, Director, NRC Mithun told the trainees about bio-security maintenance at pig farm to prevent the introduction of infectious disease like African Swine Fever. Dr Patil, further urged the participants to take benefit of government of India scheme like National Mission on Livestock to strengthen their pig farms. He also spoke about the need of hygienic processing of pork and making pork products. 

The training imparted hands on training on scientific pig farming including breed selection, housing management, nutrition management, disease management, bio-security and waste management etc. Demonstration on artificial insemination in pig was also done during the training. 

The resource persons for training were from ICAR Nagaland centre, KVK Dimapur, NRC Mithun, SASRD and Veterinary College, Jalukie. 

The training was coordinated by Dr Mahak Singh, Scientist and Dr Ebibeni Nguillie, ACTO KVK Dimapur.
