Niuland, March 26 (MExN): The ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Vegetable Crops, under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) of the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, in collaboration with ATMA, Niuland, organised a one-day training programme on ‘sustainable crop production and pest management in summer vegetables with composting techniques’ at Town Hall, Niuland.
A press release received here stated that the event was graced by Thepusa Nakro, District Agriculture Officer & Project Director, ATMA, Niuland. Nakro motivated the farmers by emphasising that this training is not just about education but an investment in nurturing their present and future generations by learning the art of vegetable cultivation—our primary source of food.
The programme was presided over by Prof Akali Sema, In-charge (Tribal Sub-Plan), AICRP-Vegetable Crops, SAS: Nagaland University. Addressing the farmers, she encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained in their fields to improve production, ensuring better livelihoods and food security.
Avitoli K Yeptho, Deputy Project Director, ATMA, Niuland, highlighted the significance of collaboration between ATMA, Niuland, and ICAR-AICRP Vegetable Crops in addressing agricultural challenges more effectively. The training included two technical sessions led by expert scientists and assistant professors.
Dr Waluniba, Assistant Professor, Dept of Entomology, SAS:NU conducted a session on the identification and management of insect pests in major summer crops, including the use of pheromone traps and pesticide preparation techniques.
Dr Kevineituo Bier, Assistant Professor, Dept of Soil Science, SAS:NU provided hands-on training on composting techniques using kitchen and farm waste, emphasising sustainable soil fertility management.
Dr Ashwini Ananda, Scientist, AICRP-Vegetable Crops, SAS:NU conducted a session on production technology and best practices for summer vegetable crops.
The programme was attended by farmers from all three blocks of Niuland, along with BTMs (Block Technology Managers) –Akavi Holo (Kuhuboto, Niuland), Demalu Hasnusa (Niuland Block) and Vinatoli K Yeptho (Aghunaqa, Niuland), and ATMs (Assistant Technology Managers) –Kaiho Achumi (Kuhuboto, Niuland), Aketoli Chopy (Aghunaqa), and Mlato (Kuhuboto, Niuland).
The impact of the training was assessed by Dr Guneshori Maisnam, Assistant Professor, Dept of Rural Development and Planning (RDP), SAS: NU.
